Drop Links with Mac OS X

A known desire: while surfing the web you want to save a specific link for later. I know there are various apps around that support you in this matter but Mac OS X is a very customizable operating system and comes with everything you need. The intension of my tutorial is to show that it’s not necessary to have any application running in the background for said purpose and for a better user experience. Just a few clicks and you’re done.

First we’ll navigate to the documents folder and create a new directory, “Drop Links” for example. If wanted you can add a nice icon for it. The icon I use is originally made for Drop Box and can be found here. Now drag and drop your newly created and hopefully stylish folder to your dock, as seen on the screenshot above. You think there is more you need to do? Nope, that’s all. How to use it? In Safari (I did not try any other browsers) drag the favicon of the current website to the Drop Links folder in your dock. Do it a few times to try out. Now click on it to select a stored link. Provided your folder is configured to show contents as stacks, you will see something similar. The appropriate Site will open at the click of a mouse.

Finally it should be said that you can use Spotlight to search your previously stored links, very handy.

One step more towards usability. Feel free to drop a note if you like this.
